Fuhrer Branch

In 1982, the Fuhrer Branch of the Rapides Parish Library System was built to replace the MacArthur Branch. On November 16, 1982, the library opened its doors to service a growing residential and commercial area in south and west Alexandria. This section of Alexandria continues to grow, and now in addition to serving area residents, the library also serves schools, businesses, and hospitals in the region. The Fuhrer Branch is located at the corner of Parliament and Canterbury. The land on which the library was built was donated by Leonard Fuhrer, and the library is named in honor of his mother, the late Belle Fuhrer. The library's unusual architectural design is one of its many interesting features.      Each summer the library hosts a Summer Reading Program for children and youth of all ages, from pre-schoolers to teenagers.  Among the occasions that the library celebrates are National Library Week, National Children's Book Week, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas.
