The first parish bookmobile hit the road on a Thursday. That was January 22, 1942, and since then the Rapides Parish Library has faithfully sought to provide adequate library service to the outlying rural areas not serviced by a particular branch. Although for a brief time from 1989 to 1995 the library was not able to offer bookmobile service, for the most part the bookmobile has been continuously rolling since 1942, serving both the young and the old.
For residents in the rural areas of Rapides Parish, the bookmobile is a real blessing, offering nearly all of the services provided by area branches. Upon request, the bookmobile librarian can even do special storytimes for children. The bookmobile's customers especially enjoy the personalized service the program provides. Each month the librarian puts aside special books for each regular customer. For many, it's like having your own personal librarian.
If you feel that the bookmobile service might be right for you, please contact the library at (318) 445-6436. The librarian will be glad to answer your questions and to help you access the parish's library resources either through a local branch or through regular bookmobile service.
In January 2011, our bookmobile services was merged into our new Outreach Deliveries Service. Go to that page for scheduling and updated information.
