The library opened in a corner of Tony Marino Grocery in 1941. When the town hall was built in 1953, the library was housed in a room in the front corner of that building. It quickly outgrew its location so Mrs. Marino had a new building constructed behind the original grocery store in 1961.

Today the Georgie G. Johnson Branch of the Rapides Parish Library System is located in the Old Lecompte High School in the heart of the Pie Capital of Louisiana. Ann Johnson, benefactor, had the new branch named in honor of her mother, Mrs. Georgie G. Johnson, now deceased.

One of the many special features of the library is the children’s room. With its small scaled furniture and colorful bookcases filled with a vast collection of delightful books, it invites children and parents to spend a quiet and special time together. Parent and child can relax on an antique blue couch as they enjoy a book together. The charming setting brings the children back for preschool story time each week.

The Rosa Lee Reiszner Reading Room has charmed everyone who visits. The room houses the adult fiction collection in a beautiful decor of a grand old antebellum home. You feel as if you have stepped back in time once you enter the room. From the soft green of the walls to the beautiful paintings that grace it, you are invited to rest upon the graceful antique furniture as you enjoy a quiet reading time.
